How to Move from Accounting into FP&A
Mohamed Chaudry FCCA · Operating CFO · 25 years · $300M+ raised and advised on · 5 exits
The biggest shift from accounting to FP&A is direction. Accounting tells the business what happened and makes sure it is recorded correctly. FP&A uses that foundation to explain why performance changed, forecast what happens next and influence what management should do. The transition is less about abandoning accounting and more about adding forward-looking commercial judgement.
Mohamed Chaudry’s Accounting-to-FP&A Framework
Your accounting background is an advantage
Accountants already understand how financial statements fit together and why transactions move through them. That foundation makes it easier to build credible forecasts and models. The development gap is usually not accounting knowledge. It is moving from historical accuracy to forward-looking judgement.
The mindset shift
An accounting response might say revenue was £900k against a £1m budget, creating a £100k adverse variance. FP&A continues by explaining the operational driver, whether it persists, how the forecast changes and what management should do about it.
Do not confuse spreadsheet complexity with FP&A quality
A complicated model is not automatically a useful model. The purpose is to represent the economics of the business clearly enough that management can understand what is likely to happen and what it should do.
What to learn first
Start with driver-based forecasting and simple operating models. Then improve variance analysis, scenario modelling and communication. Finally, spend more time with operating teams and practise turning analysis into a recommendation.
Accounting habit vs FP&A upgrade
| Accounting habit | FP&A upgrade | Management value |
|---|---|---|
| Report actual vs budget | Explain the driver | Understand why performance changed |
| Close the month | Update the forward view | See what happens next |
| Reconcile accounts | Reconcile assumptions to operations | Improve forecast credibility |
| Produce reports | Frame decisions | Make analysis actionable |
| Stay inside finance | Partner with functions | Understand commercial reality |
Pressure test
Take your latest monthly variance report. For every material variance, can you explain the operational driver, whether it continues, the impact on the forecast and the action management should consider? If not, that is the FP&A gap to work on first.

What is the difference between accounting and FP&A?
Accounting primarily explains what happened accurately. FP&A uses that foundation to forecast what happens next, explain drivers and help management decide what to do.
Can an accountant move into FP&A?
Yes. Accounting provides a strong technical foundation. The transition requires adding forecasting, modelling, analysis, business partnering, communication and commercial judgement.
What should I learn first for FP&A?
Start with driver-based forecasting and simple operating models, then develop variance analysis, scenarios, business partnering and decision-focused communication.
Do I need advanced Excel to work in FP&A?
Strong modelling skills help, but spreadsheet complexity is not the objective. The real test is whether the analysis explains drivers and improves a decision.
